SUMMARY:Spokes Public Meeting - Cycling and Health
DESCRIPTION:Getting about by bike is great for you!!  Middle-aged people who cycle regularly typically enjoy the fitness level of someone 10 years younger\, and gain two years in life expectancy.  And it’s great for society\, reducing pressures on the NHS\, on our worsening climate and on our fragile environment. \nBut what of the dangers that worry people – crashes and pollution – whether you are on a bike or too scared to use one?   Yes\, these are very serious and must be tackled through infrastructure\, restrictions on motor traffic\, and other means – but even now the health benefits of getting about by bike hugely outweigh the negatives. \nTo investigate these issues our summer public meeting is on Cycling and Health\, with expert speakers on physical activity\, air pollution and road danger.  As you would expect\, all our speakers use a bike regularly. \nSpeakers\n\nthe medical expert  Professor Chris Oliver Honorary Professor of Physical Activity at Edinburgh University \n\nthe air pollution expert  Emilia Hanna  Friends of the Earth Air Pollution Campaigner\nthe legal expert  Jodi Gordon  Assistant Solicitor at Cycle Law Scotland\nthe political expert  Cllr Cammy Day  Vice Convener of Edinburgh City Council’s Health Committe\nfollowed by a one-hour audience QA/ panel discussion chaired by Dr Helen Zealley former Public Health Director at NHS Lothian\n\n\nPracticalities\n\nMonday 13 June\, 7.30-9.30pm\nDoors open 6.45 for coffee\, stalls & chat.  Tea/Coffee served until 7.15\nAugustine United Church\, 41 George IV Bridge\, Edinburgh\nQueries? / More info?   Email  spokes@spokes.org.uk
