SUMMARY:Living in the Gap: a voluntary health sector perspective on health inequalities in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Ministerial address: Jamie Hepburn MSP\, Minister for Sport\, Health Improvement & Mental Health\nHosted by Murdo Fraser MSP\nFairfax Somerville Room\, The Scottish Parliament\nOur evening reception will be held at the Scottish Parliament\, kindly hosted by Murdo Fraser MSP on Wednesday the 18th of March. The purpose of the event is to come together to discuss our new report ‘Living in the Gap: a voluntary health sector perspective on health inequalities in Scotland.’ \nThe crux of the report is the value that the third sector can provide at a localised level to confront health inequalities. This report examined the work of Voluntary Health organisations across Scotland and includes 10 case studies which highlight the wide range of work currently happening in Scotland. \nOur event will be an opportunity to discuss: \n\nHealth inequalities across Scotland – do we have shared language?\nHow does the voluntary health sector contribute to tackling health inequalities\nHow can we build on the report conclusions and come together to effectively tackle inequalities across Scotland?\n\nWe are delighted that Jamie Hepburn MSP\, Minister for Sport\, Health Improvement and Mental Health will address our guests. We anticipate this event will be an important evening of discussion and networking. \nIf you would like more information on this event please contact Lauren Blair lauren.blair@vhscotland.org.uk \n

SUMMARY:Public Health Review Third Sector Sounding Board
DESCRIPTION:A review of public health is currently underway in Scotland. Called for by Scottish Ministers in November last year\, the review is being carried out by an expert review group\, which includes Voluntary Health Scotland. The review group\, chaired by Dr Hamish Wilson\, met in December 2014 and will meet monthly\, aiming to report to Ministers in summer of this year. \nCurrently the group is developing its engagement with stakeholders and VHS is holding a Sounding Board meeting to give an opportunity to third sector colleagues to contribute their thoughts and experiences to the debate. We are inviting a targeted list of organisations and individuals in order to ensure that discussion is rooted in experience and understanding of public health from a third sector perspective. \nThe sounding board will be facilitated by Audrey Birt (former Chair of the Health & Social Care Alliance) and we will be joined by Heather Cowan\, the policy lead at the Scottish Government for the public health review and by Grant Sugden\, CEO\, of Waverley Care\, who is the voluntary sector (VHS) representative on the review group. \nThis is a great opportunity to ensure that the activities and experiences of third sector organisations are recognised in the review and that the review group takes an informed cross-sectoral perspective in its work. \nFor more information on this meeting\, please contact Lauren Blair  or call 0131 474 6189.

SUMMARY:What more can public services do to reduce inequalities in Scotland?

SUMMARY:Knowing Me\, Knowing You
DESCRIPTION:Knowing Me\, Knowing You: A Learning Exchange between National and Local Organisations \nCommunity Health Exchange (CHEX)\, Community Food and Health (Scotland)\, and Voluntary Health Scotland are holding an exciting learning and networking event on Tuesday 19 August 2014. \nThe event will focus on increasing understanding and engagement between the Scottish Government staff and the community and voluntary health sectors\, and working in partnership to improve health outcomes and people’s lives.  It will be a networking opportunity for civil servants and other national colleagues to learn with and from local organisations. SUMMARY:Sounding Board - Public Bodies Bill Regulations
DESCRIPTION:Public Bodies Act \nThe Public Bodies (Joint Working) (Scotland) Act 2014 received Royal Assent on 1 April 2014. The aim of the Act is to integrate health and social care in Scotland\, to improve services for people who use them. Integration aims to ensure that health and social care provision across Scotland is joined-up and seamless\, especially for people with long term conditions and disabilities. \nTo accompany this Act\, Scottish Ministers will put in place a number of regulations and orders (secondary legislation) that will inform local level integration. We have produced a summary briefing document for Voluntary Health Scotland members that outlines the draft guidelines and consultations – visit our website for more information. \n Sounding Board Event \nVHS are holding a sounding board for members to unpack these consultations and form a consultation response that reflects your views. \nThis will be held on Monday 14 July at 2pm at the Mansfield Traquair Centre.  Please contact Susan Lowes if you would like to attend.

SUMMARY:Unequal lives\, unjust deaths: Children and the early years
DESCRIPTION:Children and the early years: tackling health inequalities \nVoluntary Health Scotland is launching a programme of four events examining how the voluntary sector can collaborate to tackle health inequalities across the life course. The first of these events\, focusing on Health inequalities\, children and the early years\, will be held in partnership with Children in Scotland\, in Edinburgh on the morning of Tuesday 13 May 2014. \nHealth inequalities can be apparent from the earliest stage in life and disadvantaged people in Scotland die younger. Addressing the inter-generational factors that risk perpetuating Scotland’s health inequalities is essential. These health inequalities are not inevitable and they can be prevented. \nThis seminar is the first part in a series of events to examine how the voluntary sector can collaborate to tackle health inequalities. \nAim \n\nGain a better understanding of health inequalities\, to share learning and experience about the interventions that make a difference\nSupport collaboration and partnership between public and voluntary sectors.\nPromote awareness and understanding of the contribution of the voluntary health sector to tackling health inequalities.\nThe importance of the early years and children’s services from prevention to early intervention.\n\nConfirmed speakers include: \nJackie Brock\, Children in Scotland – welcome and introduction \nGerry McLaughlin\, NHS Health Scotland – Evidence base for tackling health inequalities \nAlex Young & Judith Ainsley\, Scottish Government – Breaking inter-generational cycles of poverty\, inequality and deprivation by improving children’s wellbeing and life chances – Child Poverty Strategy for Scotland \nSally Ann Kelly\, Senior Manager for 3rd Sector GIRFEC Project and Early Years Task force member – Cross-sectoral working with children in the early years – a strategic view \nEwan Aitken – BBC Children in Need  – Cross-sectoral working with children in the early years – a funder’s perspective \nClick here to view the programme for the day – Agenda – Health inequalities children and the early years
