Becoming a good food nation?

October 16, 2014

Recipe for Success, Scotland’s first National Food and Drink Policy was launched in 2009.  Scottish Government are now seeking views on their discussion document to build on this work and to help Scotland become a Good Food Nation.

They propose a vision that by 2025, people from every walk of life, will take pride and pleasure in the food served day by day in Scotland.  They have asked for views on what the country should be aiming to achieve, proposed priority areas and plans to drive change.

The consultation closes on 17 October and can be accessed here – http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/0045/00453219.pdf

VHS has responded to the consultation and the response can be accessed here – VHS Discussion Document Response – Becoming a Good Food Nation

We are concerned with the lack of discussion in the document around food poverty, rising inequality and increasing malnutrition. The vision outlined does not adequately reflect the priorities, needs and health outcomes of the Scottish people.  Scotland’s National Food and Drink Policy should be more focused on improving the lives of the Scottish population and on transforming our food culture to ensure that food in Scotland is fair, healthy, affordable, accessible and sustainable for everyone.
